Story:

Contrast is always of interest to me and the decorative medullar rays of the solid oak base are in stark contrast to the uniformity of the bright orange lid. Perhaps this combination wouldn’t typically result in a strong marriage but here, they seem to have found some happiness together. The black feet provide the box with some anchorage as well as adding points of detail to the design and breadth to the colour palette.

Mainly, I make boxes from a tiny workshop in my garden in North London. The material for these is predominantly wood. However, in addition to wood I like to use acrylic, plastic laminate and brass. These wonderfully uniform man made materials can provide a striking contrast with the natural, and sometimes very random texture, of solid wood and veneer. I have a design background, studying furniture design at Edinburgh in the early eighties and working in different aspects of branding design with several London based design consultancies, ever since.
