Wheel thrown Chawan tea bowl-volcanic/ash/bronze glaze
These are new pieces which have developed from my range of raku earthenware ceramics. Whilst I enjoy the unique process of raku firing, it is not without consequence in terms of the physical effort of firings, heat, smoke and post reduction. These new pots, bowls and tea bowls are quieter and more contemplative pieces than my work in raku. The tactile volcanic glaze surface ensures each work is distinctly unique and have an echo of natural stone, rock and shell. The white-green tonal inner ash glaze liner is a recipe which uses recycles the left over ash from our home wood burner to good effect! It also functional. There is still an element of physical intervention with the piece- akin to raku – some are re-assessed and multi fired. The volcanic surface can be rubbed back- and glaze re-applied to build up the layered surfaces.
