This platter is made from a flattened slab of stoneware clay which has then been stretched and put into a mould. Additional clay texture has then been heavily applied inside the platter, creating ridges and undulations. Porcelain slip has been brushed on, creating contrast and a crackled texture, and it is glazed with a transparent glaze and fired in a reduction atmosphere to 1280C.
30 x 5 cm
Hand-wash in warm water.
The reduction firing draws out impurities in the clay, and changes the colour of the clay itself where it is touched by the naked flame. This creates the different shades of toasty grey colours across the plate even when the only applied glaze is transparent. Although it is completely food-safe, due to the heavily textured interior of this platter I recommend using it as a table centrepiece or for dry fruits only. It also looks great hung on the wall.
