White grogged porcelain clay. Barium white matt glazed.

Description:

Hand made in white grogged porcelain using press moulds and extruded clay. Manipulated by hand and attached to the vessel body. Stellaria III is glazed in a hand made glaze with a barium base to create a matt, soft, white finish. The matt finish is preferable to absorb the light and let the piece create its own colour and sculptural shadow. The piece is approximately 25cms in height and about 20cms diameter.

Weight 1 kg
Dimensions 20 × 20 × 25 cm
Care Instructions:

Handle with a hand underneath the sculpture and supported by the other hand at the leafed edge to lift or transport. To clean, shower very carefully with water as not to disturb the decoration and leave to dry in a sunny dry place.

Story:

Inspired by the minute wild plant called Stellaria, populating discarded industrial sites. Notions of the living landscape, abstraction, pollen grains, and natural pattern mark Adele Howitt’s ceramic art. Slab work is twisted and turned to add detailed relief utilising the traditional pottery techniques. The clay is a sculptural medium, opposing the tradition of using it as a technical medium or an exploration of the vessel. Techniques include, drawing, hand building, coil / slab building, hand-thrown elements, extruded clay, and glazing.

Adele Howitt is an artist and maker of ceramics. She predominately works in clay to investigate the notions of the living landscape, abstraction, pollen grains, and natural patterns. Slab work is twisted and turned to add detailed relief utilising the traditional pottery techniques discovered whilst investigating the South Yorkshire Potteries, for example, Rockingham. For Adele, clay is a sculptural medium, opposing the tradition of using it as a technical medium or an exploration of the vessel. Techniques include, drawing, hand building, coil / slab building, hand-thrown elements, mould making, slip casting, extruded clay, printing and glazing.
Artwork has been exhibited across Europe including, the Steninge Slott Cultural Centre, Stockholm, Sweden, VI Biennal de Ceramica del Vendrell Barcelona Spain, Ceramica Multiplex at Kerameikon Croatia, The London Design Fair, various RHS Gardens including Chelsea Flower Show, and the British Ceramics Biennial 2017. Seedpod White is selected for the International Taiwan Biennale 2016 at the Yingge Ceramics Museum near Teipei. Her ceramics can be found in Museum Collections in Teipei, Barnsley, Croatia and various arts in health spaces.
Adele’s studio practice includes a range of designed works for the public realm; recently the town – wide trail entitled Potter About Hornsea, East Yorkshire. With artwork on roundabouts, parks, and pavements, the works are inspired by and celebrate the world renowned Hornsea Pottery.
