Small Winged Cat Bowl 2: ceramic sculpture

£55.00

8 × 8 × 7.5 cm
111 gm
mixed clays and oxides
Sold

Description:

Standing on three stumpy legs this little curio is made from a variety of clays. The cat is incised with graphic motifs. The whole piece is decorated with oxides and has undergone multiple firings before being waxed.

Unusually for me I have made three almost identical examples. Actually I made four but one has already found a home and one didn’t survive the multiple firings!

This is number two.

Weight 111 gm
Dimensions 8 × 8 × 7.5 cm
Care Instructions:

Due to the use of oxides and waxes do not use for foodstuffs.

Story:

This little bowl has the look of an artefact that has or has had a significant but unfathomable use..
There are many stages of construction and decoration along with multiple firings to create the scorched and distressed look of the finished work.

Derek Matthews: Crackingpots

Many of my ceramics start with a narrative that’s either imagined, half remembered, carefully researched or commissioned.

My output is low and slow. I will occasionally return to a theme but, unless specifically designed as a set, every piece I create is totally unique.

I am always interested in taking on commissioned work especially of a commemorative nature.

A love of whimsy, folk art, religious and tribal art and my background as an illustrator, all go into the mix.

I work with a variety of clays into which I often add other fragments of additional material.
These ”inclusions” plus the use of oxides and multiple firings add to the alchemy and often give the clay a distressed or patinated surface.

Once described as “Possibly one of the UK’s most successful illustrators that no-one has ever heard of” Derek Matthews has worked for a raft of top flight clients from Tokyo to Toronto. The Snappy series of children’s books he illustrated sold more than 13 million copies worldwide including an American number one best seller.
