Ceramic monkey hand built from slabs of stoneware clay on a base made of crank clay and porcelain.. The clay is then left to dry for a week and then has its first firing in the kiln up to 1000 C. Colourful oxides and underglazes are applied and a volcanic glaze to small ares on the base to give interesting texture. The sculpture is then fired again up to 1200 C

I have spent several periods of time in Tanzania teaching in a hospital and was lucky enough to go on safaris and saw quite a few different species of monkeys. They are fascinating to me as they have many human characteristics. I try to capture the essence of the animal rather than making an exact copy
