I’ve been working on some new pieces recently, mostly rings, using an ancient Japanese type of wax to create incredible, sculptural pieces.
As the Mitsuro Hikime wax is worked, and warms up, it becomes very pliable and stretchy, producing amazing striations and textures. It takes some time to get the hang of using it(!) but the effects are beautiful. The wax pieces are then cast in the normal lost wax casting process in silver & gold. As the wax is burned away during the process, each piece is completely one of a kind, only cast once.
Together with this, I’ve also been combining these pieces with keum boo technique that I also use, and the results are elegantly unique. Keum boo, meaning ‘attached gold’ in Korean, involves fine gold sheet which is still 25 times thicker than gold foil used for gilding, being permanently bonded to silver using heat and pressure.
