Luminous Layers: Creating Stained Glass image with Masking fluid & ink
In Person 2 hours   Mixed Media
Summary

Watercolour is one of the hardest mediums to master and masking a source of frustration. In this workshop you'll learn how to create stunning art by embracing the chaotic nature of the medium and how to work with watercolour, not fight against it. You'll also learn how to master masking fluid and exploit its characteristics. Finally, how to embrace the vibrancy and immediacy of acrylic inks. All in the process of creating an abstract picture inspired by stained glass architecture.

What you’ll do

During this time Cathy will be sharing various tips and tricks that she uses daily as the only artist who draws with masking fluid. Starting with a demonstration and introduction to the materials and tools. Looking at examples of stained glass and other paintings for ideas, you'll create your own design starting with an abstract idea which you are free to embellish within session time. How to use detailed masking to create a structure. You'll be encouraged to experiment freely with watercolour washes and acrylic inks. The idea is to explore and exploit the unique properties of the various elements used. How to remove masking and reduce the risks of tearing the paper.

What to bring

1 or 2 drawing boards. I will have watercolour paper for you to use, but the best results are achieved on stretched watercolour paper on drawing boards. (Also easier for taking the paintings home afterwards.) We won't have time to do this and the paper dry in the workshop, so you may wish to stretch an A3 piece of paper onto at least one of the boards beforehand. Please bring a large brush 5cm (2 inches) or larger. A decorators brush is perfect, as long as the bristles are flexible. Painting apron/ clothes you don't mind getting messy. Inks stain and sinks into clothing, as does masking fluid. You should not need any thing else, but you may bring any water based media you have. And of course, ideas are always welcome.

What you’ll get

Instruction, paper, watercolour washes, acrylic inks, masking fluid and the tools you'll need on the day.
