For the body and lid of the box, nothing more than a gentle wipe with a slightly damp cloth, followed by a polish with a dry cloth, should ever be necessary. Brass will oxidise over time and a careful polish with Brasso will restore its original shine.
In terms of marquetry this is a fairly simple example however, the combination of natural wood veneers and dyed (coloured) wood veneers can provide some exciting arrangements and adjacencies. A gloss finish really helps to maximise the colour saturation, almost like the lights have been switched on. As a foil, the ebonising of the box creates a strong frame around the decorative lid.
