Description:

The Jacob scarf is so called because the weft is made entirely from shades of British-grown Jacobs wool, undyed and hand-spun, and entirely handwoven in Beccles, Suffolk on a small traditional loom.

This is an embracing, soft, wind-cheating, warm and robust garment, that is also a statement piece full of natural fleece shades.

Designed on the loom, this is a unique garment and will never be exactly reproduced.

The warp and fringes are Milburn DK, a beautiful yarn of 85% British superwash Bluefaced Leicester wool blended with 15% Mulberry Silk.

The weft is a combination of pure British-grown hand-spun wools, undyed and left in their natural colours.

• Jacob (reared, sheared and homespun in UK), in multiples natural shades of brown and grey.
• Hill Radnor (reared, sheared and homespun in UK) in natural white.

Story:

Simon Middleton says: “I’ve become obsessed with the look, feel and even the smell of wool. It’s such an inspiring and evocative raw material, imbued with so much character and variation. Working with it from such an early stage, doing all the spinning of the yarn myself, with a traditional foot-powered spinning wheel, means my pieces are also uniquely ‘human scale’. It’s a very simple journey, process-wise, from sheep to finished product, which makes each piece so different from mass-manufactured garments and homewares.”

All Simon Middleton Handwoven pieces are, as the name implies, woven by hand on small, non-powered looms, using Simon’s own handspun wool.

All of Simon’s pieces are ‘designed on the loom’: improvised with only the most general idea of palette and textural approach at the outset.

Simon uses sustainably grown fibres and yarns, mostly British-grown wool. He combines the softest and most characterful wools with silks, plant-based fibres such as nettle viscose, and some recycled yarns.

His own hand-spun wool yarn, and is either undyed, making the most of the natural colours of the wool, or is small-batch dyed in the UK. Inspiration comes from the natural environment around Simon’s home in Suffolk.

Spinning and weaving by hand, says Simon, provides a unique opportunity to practise ancient crafts whilst allowing freedom of artistic expression within the boundaries of the simplest technology and the most evocative of materials.

Simon Middleton is the founder of two made-in-Britain clothing brands: Shackleton and Blackshore, and has spent a lifetime in the creative and manufacturing industries. He works in a ten by eight foot wooden shed in his Suffolk garden.
