This kiln formed fused glass bowl starts with a 25cm clrcle of clear Bullseye glass, upon which I fused a 20cm circle of gold iridised black glass, offset to one side, with an added thin rod of black glass (called a stringer) as decoration. Each piece of iridescent glass will have a slightly different surface finish, depending on where it is cut from the initial large sheet of hand rolled glass. This one shows a lot of purpley brown colour and also a bit of silver, and has quite a mottled looking finish. It is quite a deep bowl, and has a rounded bottom. It looks wonderful on its own on a side or coffee table, but is also usable for food.
23.5 x 23.5 x 5 cm
Hand washing recommended. Food safe.
I have been making this style of offset circle bowl for the past year or so, using different colours for the offset circles. But this season, I decided to experiment with Bullseye’s gold and silver iridised glass, and this bowl is the first piece in a new collection. The initial fuse firing, which goes up to 795 degrees centigrade, takes about 22 hours. The resulting flat fused piece is then placed over a plaster mould and this is placed back in the kiln for another 22 hours, during which the piece slumps into the mould, and then slowly cools down. While the main colour is gold, there are also flecks of purple, which give it piece greater depth and interest.
