This original, handwoven Macraweave textile artwork combines the graphic, structured and 3D nature of macrame with classic, textured hand-weaving. Beginning with a dressed loom, ‘Salmon’ was designed and woven directly on the loom, with each strand of cotton macrame cord integrated by hand into the woven backing cloth between rows of traditional weaving. This labour-intense way of working showcases the craftsmanship required to combine 2 different craft disciplines to create a one-of-a-kind artwork.
This woven wall-hanging features cotton macrame cord in cream, turquoise and blue, which is offset by the textured wool and cotton blend of similar colours woven in a gradient. The shaping and texture of the knotted elements connect visual references for salmon found on the West Coast of Canada.
With an overall size of 40cm x 60cm and featuring a mix solid cream, turquoise and blue cotton with a similar blend of wool and cotton in a gradient, this contemporary artwork will look beautiful when hung simply on the wall or paired with other contemporary art.

This collection of Macraweave wall-hangings is the result of many years of research into knotting and macrame techniques. It began at college over 10 years ago where I was fascinated with connecting and linking woven fibre optic panels. During lockdown I refreshed some of my old skills, learned new ones and applied that knowledge with new materials to create a fresh, new body of artwork.
