This original, handwoven textile artwork combines two forms of weaving in one design. The traditional handwoven base for this design is woven on a floor loom and integrates to metal rings into the base fabric with the weft yarns. The graphic, structured and 3D nature of the rings are then woven using contemporary tapestry techniques to weave around this circular form. This technically challenging design requires precision to weave the metal rings into position while advancing the cloth, which isn’t always possible on some types of looms. This way of working showcases the craftsmanship required to combine 2 different craft disciplines to create a one-of-a-kind artwork.
This woven wall-hanging features a background blend of turquoise and blue merino wools and cottons for depth and soft merino wool roving for the 3D circular shape. These textures combined with the bold pattern were inspired by the flow of water through a narrow channel that salmon must pass during the salmon migration in the West Coast of Canada.
With an overall size of 36cm x 40cm and featuring a mix of blues and turquoise, this contemporary artwork will look beautiful when hung on its own or when paired with other contemporary art.

This collection of ‘Double Weaving’ wall-hangings (using both hand-weaving and tapestry weaving in one design) is the result of many years of research into both traditional and contemporary hand-weaving and tapestry techniques. During lockdown I refreshed some of my old skills, learned new ones and applied that knowledge with new materials to create a fresh, new body of artwork.
