Seven large handmade glass beads strung on a hammered and oxidised sterling silver chain make this lovely and unique necklace. The beads were all made one by one and feature the same pattern on each. The base is of an olive green glass with surface decorations in ivory, dark red, olive and pea green glasses.
I made all the beads and after putting each one on a sterling silver link attached them to one of my handmade chains. The chain can be worn at several different lengths.
The beads have been etched which removes the gloss of the glass and creates a matte, almost ceramic finish.
The beads measure approximately 18mm diameter.
The total length of the necklace including the hook is 48cm
Once made the beads are heated in a kiln for many hours to help the glass settle, this increases their resilience. However they are not unbreakable and although they will withstand some dropping on concrete and stone surfaces may protest if done too much!
Clean with a soft cloth.
I base these beads on tea dresses of the 1940 with their repetitive patterns and use colours that complement and harmonise with each other. The necklace as a whole is very tactile and I find myself spinning the beads around on their links when I wear mine!
