This Fruit Market Box of Orange Pippin Apples is inspired by my love for English apples, and I particularly love the rich taste of this desert apple. I use many different coloured glazes, all made by me, and apply the glaze in a painterly manner, just like I would use paint on a canvas. I depend on ‘my minds eye’ when glazing and the glaze looks a very different colour to what it will look like after firing to 1060 deg C.
The wood box frame is handmade for me by a lovely gentleman in my village and I stain the wood and use lime wax so it has a distressed ‘aged’ effect, giving it the authenticity of market boxes from many years ago – before plastic!
All my market boxes are the same size 28x35x6cms so my customers can collect a range of fish, fruit and vegetable boxes and they will display nicely together. Just like a market stall!

Cox’s Orange Pippin is the classic English apple cultivar first grown in 1825, at Coinbrook in Buckinghamshire, England, by the retired brewer and horticulturalist Richard Cox. The Hybrid parentage is probably Ribson pippin, but never tasted one of those! Pippin is an old English word derived from the French word for seedling, and this variety was discovered by chance as a seedling.
