Product Details

This brooch is one-of-a-kind, handmade in Sterling silver and resin with a Sterling silver brooch pin that clicks neatly into place. It is fully hallmarked on the back by the Edinburgh Assay Office with the International Convention Marks chosen as a symbol of reaching out across borders in a world where countries are increasingly looking inwards, borders and barriers are being resurrected and international tension grows.

Dimensions: 5.5 x 3 cm
Care Instructions:

To clean your jewellery, polish the silver with a soft silver polishing cloth, then gently clean the resin with a drop of baby shampoo on a soft damp cotton cloth. Rinse in lukewarm water and dry with a soft tissue. Do not use detergent.

Since my early years, I have been fascinated with space exploration and our ability as a species to work together to accomplish wonderful things. The brooch was inspired by the Cassini-Huygens Mission to Saturn and an image taken during that mission called ‘Quintet of Moons’. The brooch and image capture a moment when the beautiful ringed planet and four of its moons come together in the Cassini spacecraft’s field of view. The Cassini Mission was a joint endeavour between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Italian Space Agency. The mission was ended in 2017, with a deliberate dive into the planet’s atmosphere after a number of risky passes through the gaps between Saturn and Saturn’s inner rings.

The making of the brooch involved sawing, forming, soldering, hardening, mould-making, mixing colour palettes, casting resin, filing, sanding and polishing. The three colours used in the brooch were Slate Grey, Autumn Yellow and Pale Blue Dot Blue (mixed to match the colour of Earth as seen from space). For me it symbolises hope against all odds and mankind’s ability to look outwards, reach out across borders and work together to achieve what might at first have seemed impossible.

The brooch comes in a recycled-card gift box and will be carefully packaged to ensure that it is not damaged in transit.
