‘Compartmentalised’ – This pandemic sculpture was inspired by lockdown. Scars we bear on our bodies, how we juggle daily life with blocks on our shoulders and head, some doors opened, some doors closed we dare not to visit, some doors are half opened, however, we all need a vent for steam to get out from our head.

Jenny Chan is a self-taught ceramic artist at Yorkshire Artspace, Sheffield. Born in Hong Kong and settled in the UK in 2014.

Jenny crafts unique and thought-provoking figurative sculptures, with a focus on faces and the stories behind them. Her clay journey started as an escape from depression, working with clay gives her a sense of focus, peace, and fulfillment to beat anxiety.

Figurative sculptures, each with their facial expression and their own story, capturing the essence of a brief expression of a person.

Using traditional hand-building techniques in coiling and slab building. Each piece is unique and individually sculpted, no two pieces are the same.

Using mainly stoneware clay. The sculptures are partially press moulded, each piece is individually carved, impressions and inlay surface decoration using coloured slips, oxides and underglazes.
