Product Details

This is a hollow sphere – thrown on the wheel with a cradle to hold a tea light – in this case a small tea light (4øcms)
The intense blue surface has been raku fired, the red hot pot is removed from the kiln and placed in woodshavings to create the lustrous metallic intensity of the blue glaze.
Looks great on the dinner table or window sill – use it for summer evenings outside with citronella candles or for cosy winter evenings to bring a warm glow to your interiors
Each piece is a one-off . All the pieces are hand thrown on a kick wheel, small variations in size and shape are part of this hand made process and the glazing is all by hand too so slight variations in tone and colour are a natural result. This adds to the unique character of each lovingly made item.

Weight: 0.7 kg
Dimensions: 13 x 13 x 15 cm
Care Instructions:

Can be washed by hand
Fits standard 4øcm tea light available from most supermarkets

I had designed these candleholders some time ago but it was only recently that I devised this method of making them on the wheel. They eluded me so often that I had almost given up hope of ever being able to produce them, so they are a particularly favourite piece. Throwing spheres and hollow forms is an interesting meditative activity. Control of the clay, the wheel and the hands all have to work together as they do in most throwing, but here the complex idea of inside/outside, surface and edge collide in one form. At the last moment, before I seal the piece up, I like to blow a long exhale into the top, which gives the form extra buoyancy.

I then let the piece dry for sometimes 2 or 3 days before I hollow out the cradle to hold the candle. At that point too, I create a stable base and a small hole to allow the air to escape.

When I make the hole through the clay, there is an audible whisper as the breath that was sealed in is released.
