Richard Shock Woodturner

I was accepted as a member of the Oxfordshire Craft Guild in 2003. In 2005 I left my job to become a full time turner and soon afterwards was accepted on the Register of Professional Turners, under the auspices of the Worshipful Company of Turners. I have also been accepted as a member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and of the Oxfordshire Craft Guild.

Wood is an exciting material to work with, providing a huge range of colours and forms. I use mainly British native woods, increasingly from local sources.

Often with my signature inlays or my new veneered designs, most of my work is functional, usually finished with carnauba wax which is non-toxic. Other pieces are purely artistic such as vases and discus forms. In either case, I aim to make high quality work combining good techniques with attention to design to enhance the inherent beauty of the figure and grain.
