COMPANY

Now in its third year Handmade in Britain is one of the fastest growing UK based organisation set up by Designer-maker Piyush Suri aiming to promote talented designer makers who produce their work in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

The organisation works to promote professional design excellence through productive partnerships between the designer and the public.

Handmade in Britain is an initiative to:
  • Maintain the high standards in British Craft sector and create market opportunities for buying craft.
  • Provide a platform to new designers/makers to start their own business.
  • Increase the accessibility of the works of crafts people to the public.
  • Organise training workshops for new designers/makers.
  • Focus on eco-friendly and low carbon footprint level hand-crafted products.
One of the main focuses of Handmade in Britain is to offer support and promote new Designer-makers who are new to the business. The whole idea is to make the designer-makers aware of new and potential markets whether in UK or overseas.

Handmade in Britain plans to work with Organisations overseas to organise events specifically to promote UK based designer/makers.

The first show Handmade 2007 @ Chelsea Old Town Hall, London showcased 80 designers with a class of 2007 graduated from Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design along with some established Designer/makers. In 2008 there were 50 designer/makers who exhibited at the Assembly Rooms, Bath and around 55 designers who took part in Chelsea Old Town Hall, London.

WHAT DESIGNERS SAY ABOUT HANDMADE IN BRITAIN

Elisabeth Hopkins - Textile Designer
I am very attracted to the ethos of Handmade In Britain and the promotion of up and coming British designers who produce original; 'one-off' pieces to the highest standards of craftsmanship. The events held by this Organisation are very important in the development of British designers, especially to myself, who in the early stages of business are very keen to promote my work to potential clients. It is also a good chance to network and meet fellow designers to an extent of building up a 'community spirit'.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Chelsea show, both fellow exhibitors and the public were friendly and encouraging. The event certainly helped to promote Elizabeth Hopkins Textile Design. Chelsea was great fun too - which is also very important.

I look forward to taking part in future Handmade In Britain ventures and wish the Organisation all the very best of success for its' future.

Lucy Jade Sylvester – Jewellery Designer
I love doing the Handmade in Britain show and some of the comments from visitors to me were that the standard of work was very high and all the exhibitors were friendly and approachable Also that the work available was very reasonably priced.
